This Halloween Let Kids Be the Ones Who Create the Surprise

A simple mail mission gives children the chance to make Halloween special for five people they choose.

By the time Halloween arrives, someone has found the costume and hidden the candy in a place the children definitely know nothing about.

Most Halloween surprises are prepared for kids. They open treat bags, visit decorated houses and discover what the adults have planned.

This year, give your child a chance to create a little Halloween surprise for someone else.

Start with one question:

“Who would you like to surprise this Halloween?”

The answer might be a best friend, a classmate, a cousin or a grandparent who lives far away.

That list becomes the beginning of Mailo’s Halloween Mail Mission.

Choose five people

Mailo is TaleMail’s friendly mail character. He invites children to choose five people and create one Halloween postcard for each of them.

A child might select five classmates. Another may choose a neighbor, two friends and two relatives in another state. Each child decides whose day they would like to brighten.

A card meant for a classmate will sound different from one written to Grandma. Before writing, the child has to picture the person receiving it. What makes them laugh? What have they done together? What would they enjoy hearing about?

Four simple steps

The mission gives children an easy way to find something to say.

NOTICE  something funny, surprising or a little spooky.

A pumpkin at the store looks like a potato. A neighbor puts a witch hat on the mailbox. An inflatable ghost falls over and spends the afternoon staring at the lawn.

THINK  of someone who would enjoy hearing about it.

Maybe Grandpa appreciates strange pumpkins, while a cousin would understand why the fallen ghost is so funny.

WRITE  one simple message or make a drawing.

The child could write:

“We saw a pumpkin shaped like a potato. You would have laughed.”

“Your costume idea is still the funniest one.”

“I drew this ghost because it looks like your cat.”

SEND  the card through the mail or give it directly to the person.

The child can hand one card directly to a classmate. A card for a distant relative can become a trip to the mailbox or post office.

What parents can do

Parents do not need to invent the messages or turn the activity into a writing lesson.

Ask a few questions. Write down the child’s words if needed. Help with spelling when they request it, then take care of addresses and postage.

Children can write one sentence, ask a question or fill the space with a drawing. Their words do not need to be polished. The uneven letters and unexpected details are often what make the card worth keeping.

The five postcards do not have to be completed in one sitting. Leave them somewhere visible. Another idea may appear after school or during a neighborhood walk.

One short conversation can become the first card.

A different way to experience Halloween

Something changes when a child prepares a surprise for a particular person.

They remember what a friend enjoys. They wonder what Grandma would find funny. They choose words or a picture with someone else’s feelings in mind.

A hand-delivered card lets the child see the recipient’s reaction. A mailed card begins a journey the child cannot see. Days later, someone they love opens an envelope carrying their handwriting.

For a young child, that is a substantial experience. Their idea has traveled from the kitchen table into another person’s hands.

Start with one name

You do not need all five names before beginning.

Ask your child who should receive the first Halloween card. Help them send that small surprise.

The other four names will probably follow.

That is how Mailo’s Halloween Mail Mission begins: notice one little thing, think of someone and send it their way.
