Over Spring Break, I took my kids to Grand Slam Family Fun Center in Coon Rapids, and we ended up staying for more than three hours—the surest sign that a place is a win in my book. From the moment we walked in, it had that upbeat, “choose-your-own-adventure” energy: lights, laughter, and a whole lot of options for every age and attention span. We had an absolute blast, and it’s officially one of our favorite spots when we need to get out of the house and do something fun (especially when Minnesota weather is doing its unpredictable thing).

Laser Tag: Under-the-Sea Adventure (and a Total Highlight)

If you’re looking for the “big wow” attraction, their laser tag is out of this world. The arena feels like you’ve stepped into an under-the-sea scene—glowing black lights, fog in the air, and that heart-pumping music that makes everyone (kids and adults) suddenly very serious about their mission. We played more than once, and the kids immediately started planning their next round before the first one even ended.

  • Multi-level arena lit by black lights
  • State-of-the-art laser tag phasers
  • High-tech vests/bases and techno-inspired music
  • About 3,800 sq. ft. of space to run and strategize
  • Haze in the arena so you can actually see your laser pulses

It’s also a great option if you’re planning a birthday party or even a team-building event. You can do an individual laser tag session, or go all-in with an Unlimited Play Pass if you want to bounce between attractions without watching the clock.

Mini Golf: Dragons, Moats, and Indoor Putting

We were so excited to hit their 18-hole indoor mini golf course—which is perfect for spending some quality time and laughs together.  The course has fun details like vine-covered gates, castle-like ramparts, a watery moat, and yes… plenty of photo opportunities along the way. The kids took their “mini golf championship” very seriously, and we’re still giggling about each-others “golf skills.”

So Much More Than Laser Tag + Golf

One of the reasons we love Grand Slam is that it works for different ages (and different moods). When one kid wants to run, another wants a game, and someone else needs a snack break, you don’t have to leave—you just pivot to the next thing. That’s how we ended up with three+ hours of nonstop fun without anyone asking to go home.

  • Bumper Cars: Pure chaos in the best way. Lots of laughing, lots of spinning, and an easy win when you need a quick “everybody do this together” activity.
  • Indoor Play Zone (kids 12 and under): This is a big hit for burning off energy. It’s a two-story indoor playground with slides, bounce house, and obstacles to keep kids moving.
  • Arcade: There are 50+ games—think Skee-Ball, air hockey, and plenty of classic-style games. You can earn e-tickets and cash them in for prizes, which adds extra motivation.
  • Indoor Batting Cages: A fun option if you have kids who love baseball/softball (or if you just want to try something different). You get 18 pitches per token, and there are multiple speed options.
  • VALO (Now Open!): This is the world’s first full-body mixed-reality playground. My kids loved the experience of having their body be the controller (no wires, harnesses, vests, or equipment to wear), and their movements translated to their on-screen character. There are seven different games you can play solo or with friends, and some games work for kids as young as 4.

MN Mom Tips Before You Go

  • Bring socks (or wear them in). Socks are required for the Play Zone (kids 12 and under) and for VALO. For VALO specifically, shoes must be removed to keep dirt, debris, water, and snow out of the play space.
  • Consider the Unlimited Play Pass if you want to stay awhile and try a bunch of things (we loved being able to bounce around).
  • If you go often, ask about their 10 wristband punch card for the Play Zone—it can save money compared to buying individually.

Birthday Parties at Grand Slam

If you’re already thinking ahead to your next birthday celebration (because somehow it’s always around the corner), Grand Slam is one of those places that makes parties feel easy: lots of built-in entertainment, plenty to keep kids busy, and a setup that works well for groups.

Because I always want the “what’s it going to cost?” details up front—Grand Slam offers a few different birthday party packages, and they’re designed so you can pick what fits your group. From what I’ve seen, the packages generally include a set party time (often around 3 hours) and a mix of food + activities. The options range from their top-tier Super Deluxe package (the most “everything included” option) to Deluxe, plus packages that center more specifically around Laser Tag or the Play Zone (for kids 12 and under). Most packages also bundle in things like arcade credits and pizza/drinks, and some include birthday-kid perks.

I’m including a picture below with the current package pricing and exactly what each one includes, since those details can change.

Tip: Package details (and pricing) can change, so it’s always worth confirming the latest info when you reserve—especially if you’re deciding between Ninja Course vs. Play Zone access for your group.

The best part is that you can build a party around what your kids love—high-energy, low-key, or a little bit of everything. Here are some of the activities that can make a Grand Slam birthday feel extra memorable:

  • Laser Tag for the “main event” moment (perfect for groups that love friendly competition)
  • Mini Golf as a fun, everyone-can-play option
  • Bumper Cars for big laughs and high energy
  • Arcade Games for mixing and mingling (plus prizes with e-tickets)
  • Play Zone for kiddos 12 and under who want to climb, slide, and burn off birthday energy
  • Indoor Batting Cages for baseball/softball lovers
  • VALO (mixed-reality) for something newer and different—full-body gaming where your movements control the action
  • Reserve ahead: Party reservations are typically required at least 24 hours in advance (otherwise walk-in pricing may apply).
  • Minimum for party pricing: There is typically a minimum of six purchased birthday wristbands to qualify for birthday party pricing.
  • Play Zone age note: The Play Zone is for children 12 and under.
  • Pricing: Prices are subject to change—if you’re budgeting for a group, it’s worth confirming details when you book.

If you’re looking for a Spring Break activity, a weekend treat, or just a reliable place where the kids can actually play hard and have fun, Grand Slam in Coon Rapids is absolutely worth a visit. We left happy (and tired—in the best way), and before we pulled out of the parking lot I was already hearing, “Can we go back soon?” from the backseat.
