A Legacy on Pelican Lake

Cabin O’ Pines began as a Finnish homestead on Pelican Lake in 1904—where the sauna tradition came first—and it has grown into a beloved, multi-generation family resort through steady care, thoughtful improvements, and a deep love for life on the water. From the earliest boatbuilding days to today’s cabins, yurts, marina rentals, and campground, the spirit has stayed the same: welcome guests like family and make it easy to create lasting Northwoods memories.

  • 1904: Thomas and Ida Plii establish the homestead at today’s resort location—building a sauna first, in Finnish tradition.
  • 1907–1910: The Orr area grows during the logging era; a trading post is built and Thomas becomes known for carpentry and boatbuilding on Pelican Lake.
  • 1928: The current sauna (the third on the site) is built—still warming guests after lake days.
  • 1930s: Early guests arrive to fish and picnic; the trading post is converted into a duplex and rentals begin.
  • 1940s: Cabins, docks, and fish-cleaning infrastructure expand, and electricity upgrades help transform the homestead into a full resort.
  • 1966: The split-level home/lodge is built—today’s Main Lodge and the hub of the resort.
  • 1976–today: New generations continue the tradition with campground growth, dock expansions, updated boat fleets, the Yurt Village, and ongoing renovations—now led by fifth-generation owners Ross and Lara Coyer, and celebrating the arrival of the 6th generation with the birth of their Daughter Olive.
